More about OHYUNG's IOWA:
IOWA documents OHYUNG’s year living in Iowa City between 2023 and 2024, during which she became embedded in the local DIY music scene while composing original scores for the cult-acclaimed Happyend(dir. Neo Sora) and Oscar short-listed Sorry, Baby (dir. Eva Victor).
“This record is my evocation of my time there, capturing both stillness and the pain of rupture, followed by an embrace of change,” OHYUNG explains. “It’s half internet and half physical: chopped and distorted Christian choral music funneled through cassettes and tube compressors, paired with textural high-end synthesizers, stock digital presets, and phone field recordings, all assembled like a film score.”
The release follows last year's You Are Always On My Mind, a record Paste called "an unpredictable masterpiece" and Pitchfork praised as an "extraordinary burst of pop." IOWA marks OHYUNG's return to ambient music following her 2022 breakout album imagine naked!, which The Quietus described as "a masterful selection of muscular, shuddering, trembling ambient excursions" and NPR Music named one of the 50 Best Albums of 2022.
OHYUNG describes IOWA as "an ode to the vast beauty of the Midwest, fields of corn, rolling hills, harsh winters, tornado sirens, and the trans people that survive despite the threat of right-wing christofascism. IOWA is my love letter to Iowa City and the Midwest, my experimental trans Bruce Springsteen Nebraska."
