* August 24th-29th (Monday-Saturday)
* 6 day Timber Framing Course
* 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily
In this hands-on course, you’ll learn the fundamental techniques of timber frame construction using traditional mortise and tenon joinery with our instructor Skip Dewhirst. Through practical experience, you'll develop skills in layout, tool handling, and joinery cutting. Over the course of the week, students will collaborate on a small timber frame structure, culminating in a traditional frame raising on the final day.
Background
Timber framing is a traditional method of building with heavy timber—using posts, beams, joists, and rafters joined with wooden joinery rather than metal fasteners. This craft has roots going back over a thousand years in Europe and even longer in Asia.
In recent decades, timber framing has experienced a revival in North America. Today’s timber framers often blend historic techniques with global influences and modern tools, creating a vibrant, evolving craft rooted in tradition.
Course Objectives
Students will:
- Learn to lay out joinery using the Square Rule method
- Use hand tools (chisels, mallets, saws & boring machines) to cut mortise and tenon joints
- Participate in assembling and raising a timber frame
- Engage in evening sessions covering topics like timber frame design, engineering, and wall systems
Instruction combines hands-on daytime work with occasional evening presentations, discussions, or additional shop time.
